John Webber
1751 – 1793
English painter of Swiss descent. He was the son of the Swiss sculptor Abraham Wäber, who had moved to London in the early 1740s. In 1757 Webber was sent to Berne for his education: from 1767 to 1770 he was apprenticed to the landscape painter and printmaker Johann Ludwig Aberli, who specialized in mountain and lake views, executed in delicate watercolour and grey wash.
