Léonard Limosin
1505 – 1575
Léonard Limosin (also Limousin), French enameller, etcher, painter and miniature painter, the most accomplished member of one of the best-known families of enamellers working in Limoges during the 16th century. He was the best-known enameller of Renaissance France and may have learnt that trade in the Pénicaud workshop in Limoges. Encouraged by the Bishop of Limoges, Jean de Langeac, who probably put him in touch with the court of Francis I, Limosin produced painted enamels on copper in all forms, including plates and plaques with mythological and religious subjects, tableware and caskets.
