Francisco Gimeno Arasa

1858 – 1927

Spanish Catalan painter, also known by his Catalan name Francesc Gimeno. He began in the workshop of a decorative painter in Tortosa. After military service he settled in Barcelona. In 1884 he became friends with de Haes whom he visited frequently in Madrid. Between 1888 and 1904 he took part in the World Fair in Barcelona and in the Nacional de Bellas Artes in Madrid. However, he did not receive due acclaim until 1915. His powerful brushwork created looser forms and motifs, but without becoming abstract.
