Insects
1657 · Private collection
studyThis painting comes from a set of small copper panels depicting insects. Many of these panels are purely studies of insects, but these are sometimes combined with a branch of fruit or flowers, or studies of shells. The present panel depicts garden and house spiders with grass snakes and caterpillars contorted and entwined to spell the artist's name (with a variety of grass snakes and caterpillars: JoAn vAn/ Kessel).
