The Dutch garden, which reached the heights of creativity from about 1670, drew extensively on French sources and had a particularly important impact on German gardens. In 1685, the Dutch governor, later William III of England, used plans by Daniel Marot for a garden at his palace Het Loo. Contemporary etchings provide a very accurate picture of the garden, which was neglected in about 1800 and was not restored until 1978.
