This large composition by Michallon, winner of the Prix du Rome for historical landscape in 1822, was executed in the studio after a first impression from nature. The panoramic perspective and the picturesque quality of the figures suggest that Michallon was familiar with the work of 17th-century landscape artists. The painting was exhibited in 1822.
