Breton Women with Parasols

1892 · Musée d'Orsay, Paris

other

This painting is one of the last paintings that Bernard painted in Brittany. After his rift with Gauguin he left France and traveled to Egypt, where he lived until 1904. The quarrel between Bernard and Gauguin had come about because of Bernard's assertion that he had invented 'cloisonné' and Gauguin had merely taken the idea over from him and capitalised on it.
