Cornelis Symonsz. van der Schalcke

1611 – 1671

Dutch painter and draughtsman. He was baptised in Haarlem on 9 April 1617. Van der Schalcke became koster (sacristan) of the Grote Kerk of Haarlem in 1636 and he got married there on 13 March 1640 to Janneke Beuns. They had seven children (two daughters and five sons), but none of them became artists. He was a landscapist, but he is little known among the Haarlem landscape painters of the 17th century. His earliest work is dated 1640. Formerly he was considered to be a follower of Pieter de Molyn and particularly of the very influential Haarlem landscapist Jan van Goyen. A number of Van der Schalcke's landscapes, with their yellowish-grey tones, strongly resemble those of Van Goyen. His oeuvre is small but it undoubtedly places him within the tradition of Haarlem landscape painting.
