Schödlberger was in Rome in 1817-18, but the two ideal landscapes illustrating the times of the day (shown here) were painted in Vienna. They demonstrate that the painter was a student of Claude Lorrain but the influence of the Hackert landscape school can be also observed.

Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger

Johann Nepomuk Schödlberger was an Austrian landscape painter, who was described as an "undaunted producer of ideal landscapes in the age of Realism." A native of Vienna, Schödlberger enjoyed great success in his profession. He became member of the Vienna Academy in 1815. Between 1813 and 1822 his landscapes dominated the exhibitions at the Academy. Schödlberger's patrons included Emperor Franz I of Austria, King Ludwig I of Bavaria and the Grand Duke of Weimar. His works may be found in numerous Austrian and German museums.
