Whether the undated panel, the inscription of which describes Anne as Henry VIII's wife, was done in her lifetime is difficult to determine, as the picture could have been painted after her death for a member of her family. It was said of Anne that she "was not one of the most beautiful women in the world"; "she was of middling height, had a dark complexion, a long neck, a wide mouth... and fine black eyes.
