A Barge in a Norfolk Landscape

1859 · Private collection

landscape

The painting shows a barge lying moored alongside a reedy bank on the Norfolk Broads. In the nineteenth century, the Broads served as major transport routes, and the flat-bottomed barges that traversed them were specially designed to navigate shallow waterways. The painting is signed and dated lower left: 'James Webb 59'.
