Portraiture during the first half of the 19th century can be classified in several ways: the ones depicting the model in an interior or outdoors; portraits of families belonging to the bourgeoisie, aristocracy or to the nobility; pictures with only a few figures, or showing more than one generation together. The serenity or animation of a composition can also be a basis of comparison. After studying in Vienna, Munich and Italy, Henrik Weber became an acknowledged painter of genres and historical compositions.

About the Artist

Henrik Weber

1818 – 1866

Hungarian painter. He was T. Kaerling's pupil in Pest, then Leopold Kupelwieser's and Johann Ender 's in Vienna. He lived on private lessons and lithographs. He painted genre lives in the 1830s (Dressing the Bride, Palm Sunday, etc.). He went to Munich in 1840. On his return to Hungary, he painted several historic pictures (János Hunyadi's Death, 1844, King Solomon in Prison, 1852, etc.). He visited Italy in 1845-47 where he painted vedutas and women in folk dress. He was a notable portraitist of his period ( Composer Mihály Mosonyi and his Wife, Pest Citizen).
