The archangel Michael was, like St. George the dragon-killer, one of the typically warlike saints so greatly approved in the age of chivalry. The Bible tells us that he fought with Satan for the body of Moses and we can read in the Apocalypse how he defeated the dragon with seven heads and ten horns.

About the Artist

Juan de la Abadia

Spanish painter, formerly known as the Master of Almudévar after a panel representing St Dominic in Almudévar (Huesca). His other known paintings include a St. Catalina (1490), in the church of la Magdalena de Huesca (now lost) and a Saviour, now at the Museum of Zaragoza. He painted works for the cathedral in Jaca between 1473 and 1490. His son Juan de la Abadía the Younger (active 1489, died before 1513) worked with him.
