About the Artist

François van der Donckt

1757 – 1813

François Joseph Octave van der Donckt was a Flemish painter and miniaturist. He studied at the Stedelijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Bruges before 1775. He was the pupil of Jan Antoon Garemijn. He was active in Bruges (1775-82), Paris (1782-85); he traveled through Dunkirk and Paris to Italy (1789-91), and worked in Bruges until his death.
