This view shows the Kloveniersburgwal and the tower called 'Swijgh Utrecht'. Kloveniersburgwal is an Amsterdam canal flowing south from Nieuwmarkt to the Amstel River on the edge of the medieval city. The Swijgh Utrecht was completely destroyed in 1882.

About the Artist

Jan the Elder Ekels

1724 – 1781

Dutch painter. He was a pupil of Dirck Dalens III. He painted mostly city views in the manner of Jan ten Compe. He was also an art restorer. His son Jan Ekels the Younger was a successful artist.
