The painting was based on a drawing of the location, dated 1761, made by Paulus Constantijn la Fargue, the artist's brother. In the distance we can see the Mauritshuis by the Hofvijver. The staffage differs from that in the drawing.

About the Artist

Jacob Elias La Fargue

1735 – 1771

Dutch painter, part of the La Fargue family of artists. He was the younger brother of Paulus Constantijn La Fargue. The oeuvre of Jacob Elias, who regularly collaborated with Paulus, consists mostly of paintings and drawings of The Hague and surroundings, but he also depicted Haarlem, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Amersfoort. He was strongly influenced by Paulus, although Jacob was a freer draughtsman, and his palette was darker in tone. He became a member of the Confrerie Pictura in The Hague in 1761 and lived and worked there until he died.
